Say so long

Good colleagues are underrated.  I never thought of it before I joined the work force but good colleagues easily trump bad bosses, hard labour and even, for awhile, an unsatisfactory or unfulfilling career.  There is nothing like having like-minded people to talk/ share a little whine and a moan/ laugh with, and the days improve exponentially.

In that department, I have been supremely lucky.  When I was on my first official internship, my way was cushioned by the lovely peers and mentors that I met.  My colleagues at my previous job were some of the best people I have ever had the pleasure to meet and we're still good friends today.  Where I work now, I wake up raring to meet both my students and fellow teachers.  I wouldn't have made it through San Francisco without Edie and Shirin, for example, and all of us have so much fun together that we often hang out outside working hours.

Marianna was a good colleague but she'll remain a good friend.

The week that she left, Rebecca organised a farewell party for her and it was moving to see how everyone jumped at the chance to show love and what a warm, generous occasion it was.

Of course, we took a ton of pictures.

My partner-in-crime.

Marianna was so stunned that she started tearing in the corridor and refused to come in.  Eventually, she got over the surprise and we had a really nice time.

Even ex-colleagues stopped by.

Amanda is responsible for the last two pictures.  Because of her ridiculous instructions ("Keep that face, baby, keep that face!  Show me the love!"), no one can keep a straight face.

There was pizza and dimsum and lots of photobombing.  At one point, in all the running around and taking of photos, Rebecca left her plate on the window sill and someone stole and ate her (highly coveted) egg tart.  She prostrated herself violently on the couch in despair and while I'll spare her the indignity of that photo, I will show the aftermath.

Don't be fooled by the genial smile.  This is the face of someone in mourning and out for blood.

In the meantime, the balloons were a huge hit.

I love how the colours came out in the photos!  (Amanda will want me to tell you that those last two poses were Wai Kit's idea.  Doesn't change the fact that she's happily capitulating.)

There were laughs.  And brownies.  And at some point, Amanda and I launched into our default America's Next Top Model mode.  Whenever the cameras come out, there's bound to be some horseplay and this time, we decided to use the office couch as the backdrop for a lifestyle magazine shoot.  Everything was business as usual except that this time there were people around and everyone decided to get in on the act, whether directing, shooting or posing.  It was good fun.

The original pose.  Then we got Wai Kit into the picture and asked them to pose like an affluent married couple.

Well.  Maybe a couple with a contemptuous husband and a clueless wife.

We tried directing another shot.

"BFFs reading" turned out to be a peaceful alternative.

The biggest surprise of the day, though, was Xiang Wei, who dug deep and showed us the model within.  I styled this pose in the vein of "metrosexual man-about-town checking on his cufflinks and thinking" and we all agreed that he pulled it off really well.  Oh, for a proper coffee cup!

Finally, Daphnie impressed us all with her photo printer.  The tiny Canon Selphy doesn't look like it can do much, but the photos turned out amazing.

For instance, here is my original photo of Marianna and Swee Heng.

The printer prints each picture in four stages: yellow, magenta, cyan and then black for contrast.  We all stood there in awe watching the photos sliding back and forth before finally shooting out in full living colour.  It was like magic, watching the layers of colour grow opaque and then suddenly warm into life.

This is the final product.  Seriously.  Look at that!  I'm not planning to get any more camera bits and pieces like lenses or flashes, but this could be a nice finishing touch to my current setup.  Imagine what it could do for journalling if I tucked little photo pouches into the backs of my notebooks or binders!

HMMM.

Portraits of Amanda

I was going to start with a post full of farewell pictures from a shindig we had at the office last week but I realised that I had an excess of photos of my self-proclaimed BFF and decided to hive them off into their own entry.

On the one hand, I'm tempted to make a joke about just how much Amanda loves the camera.  Rebecca and I discovered that the moment you pointed a lens in her direction, even if she wasn't looking directly at you, she would somehow sense it, smize, and shift into a slightly more model-esque pose.

On the other hand, she's fun, photogenic, patient and super willing to try all kinds of random stunts; basically a camera rookie's dream.  And whenever I need to practise, she's more than willing to help me out, so hey, everyone wins.

Here are some random portraits of Amanda that I took with my 35mm at the party.

Can you tell she was enamoured with the massive rabbit balloon?

We ended up spending a significant amount of time mucking around on the couch pretending to shoot for GQ, Cleo and a home and decor magazine.  You know, just another day at the office, folks, move along, nothing to see here.

Oh, and my favourite photo of the day?  Behold!

While stocks last

Just looking at that Mustafa window logo makes me excited.  So much oppoortunity!

I tend to forget about Mustafa and grump about the cost of living until, every few months or so, Mel texts and suggests going there in the middle of the night.

Among the goods that are up for grabs: a pack of 12 red leaf ballpoint pens for $4.  A box of 50 Zesta Ceylon teabags (good tea!) for $2.50.  50ml bottles of Adidas Eau De Toilette for $8 a pop.

And a camera section that I studiously ignore.

Gratitude list: Lately

On Wednesday night, my colleague Rebecca texted me.  "Hey, tomorrow bring your camera," she said, "We can be the designated photographers."

We were having a farewell for a friend the next day and we were eager to capture as many moments as possible.  It turned out to be a lot of fun.  I've never cooperatively shot with someone else before but we ran around together pretending to be from a photography company, ordering our friends around (some of them were more than happy to comply) and saying things like, "Yes, yes, this is my second shooter.".

Games aside, I learned a lot watching Rebecca.  She's been taking photos for a lot longer than I have and has a great eye.

We were interested in slightly different moments and different angles, and that was why our batches of photos turned out slightly different in a good way.  We have the same Canon body, so we could easily compare what we were doing.

After the party ("it's the hotel looobby"... sorry, going a bit R. Kelly on you there), Rebecca told me she had had fun taking pictures with me and I wholeheartedly agreed.  It's nice to find someone who enjoys doing the same thing and running around and taking pictures and comparing techniques and learning new things (I only found out what a light leak was yesterday).  I love that she is non-judgemental and doesn't tell me how things should be done, like some photography enthusiasts that I've met.  Rather, she's open to discussion and learning and looking at things from different points of view.

I'm editing the photos from that party now but in the interim, here are some random things that I'm grateful for.

Someone brought my parents a crate of the juiciest yellow peaches.

A visit from a good friend.

Snowskin mooncakes with sea-salt black sesame (!) and champagne truffle (!!) filling.  I got them from the moon cake expo thing at the Ngee Ann City Atrium.  Amanda and I took a special trip to town and spent the afternoon eating our weight in mooncake samples.  It's criminal that this is a once a year thing.

An awesome orange-themed bracelet that my mother made for me.

My parents just got back from their trip to Canada where they were visiting spawn number three.  I was adamant that they not buy me anything because my room is full to bursting, but my mother stopped by the dollar store and couldn't resist getting me this washi-tapealike.  I have to say, I'm loving it.  Imagine that, one (Canadian) dollar!

PS  I tried to make them say "69" in the bottom picture but the backs of the dispensers showed.  Oh, life!

Monday night

It's been ages since I did any colouring.  It felt good to flex the fingers and take the Derwents out for a walk.
